Background

IT is generally focused on the how things are done, defined by tooling, processes and legacy.

Employees may often struggle to understand and articulate their contribution to the business, beyond stating what they do in terms of tasks and activities.

For the business. this can lead to wasted effort, poor prioritisation, sub-optimisation, and the use of KPIs that do not connect to business value. For the employee it can lead to an underappreciation of worth and a feeling of isolation from other groups, and the business as a whole.

Introducing value-based thinking enables groups to bridge their differences and individuals to connect their contribution to the business and its customers. It provides common ideas, articulated in a neutral voice, around which different groups can rally.

About VALUE BY DESIGN

VALUE BY DESIGN is a game system that uses specially crafted card decks to explore value streams. Currently two decks have been created and more will be added over time.

Each value stream deck is comprised of a series of value phases, with each phase containing a number of discrete value contributors. Each phase has a card that sets out why it is of value, in terms of the impact on the business, its customers or users.

Each value contributor defines what set of actions and/or capabilities deliver value to their respective phase. It also suggests the skills, knowledge and insights needed to succeed.

Over the course of a game, skills, knowledge, and insight are acquired by various personas that are then able to activate value contributors, unlocking their business value.

Target audience, and benefit

The game is aimed at all levels of leadership and steering from senior managers, to unit/department managers, and team leaders.

Playing the game develops value-based thinking and promotes discussion, both in terms of the content of the deck being played, and how the approach can be transferred to your business.

Moving forwards, the approach helps identify, and articulate, areas where value can be created, and what metrics can best be used to visualise success.
